Project Overview
The 73-acre site was a former borrow pit that had ungoverned fill materials placed onsite. Corrado Construction provided the sitework for FedEx’s New Castle Distribution and Storage Facility. Corrado was also responsible for environmental enhancements that were needed due to direct floodplain impacts from the project.

Key Challenges
Working with extreme moisture-sensitive soils in the middle of winter created the need for an unanticipated change – Corrado had to import select fill to use for the building pad since the insitu-soils were unusable.
CCC also worked with a ground improvement subcontractor. Deep dynamic compaction was used, where a large lead weight was dropped onto the pad to compress the uncontrolled fill materials. This process resulted in craters similar to those on the moon. The sub then used an ironing pass to flatten the dirt that remained in between the craters but the process still left considerable divots in the soil. Corrado had to first smooth out the divots then level the pad to grade.
